Last year, I graduated with Distinction after completing the Foundation Degree in Kitchen Design. Returning to academic study after many years was both challenging and rewarding. Balancing coursework with running a business and family commitments tested my determination, but it also proved to me that I can take on demanding assignments and manage my time effectively.
From a professional standpoint, the course greatly expanded my understanding of the kitchen design industry. We explored a wide range of topics, including the evolution of the kitchen—from its origins as a simple hearth or open fire to the highly functional spaces of today. We also examined the social and political influences that shape kitchen design. I particularly enjoyed reflecting on my own cultural heritage and noticing the contrasts between the kitchens I grew up with in East Africa and the modern designs I now create for my clients.
The course was taught by industry professionals and architects who shared their expertise and diverse perspectives. Through their guidance, I developed a deeper understanding of space planning, learning how to make the best use of form, function, and flow within a kitchen layout. I also gained valuable insight into the environmental impact of design choices, exploring sustainable approaches and the careful selection of materials that balance aesthetics, durability, and ecological responsibility. Although I had some prior knowledge of ergonomics, my studies also deepened my appreciation for how this discipline supports both functionality and user comfort in kitchen design.
Overall, I have gained valuable skills, fresh insights, and a broader perspective that now inform and enrich every design I create for my clients.
